Project Description: With the advent of global warming, tidal changes and local environment degradation as a result of temperature rises and increasingly strong typhoons may very likely impact the habitat and breeding cycles of the bird species in Hong Kong. The ecology of Hong Kong is made up of complex interconnected systems, and there has never been a way to measure all of these systems. The Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled Array Data Collection System (ADCS) will revolutionize scientists and local communities to “sense” nature. The AI-ADCS will monitor the birds habitats, the most important environmental indicator, by extracting insights from the conditions in the nesting area, the foraging places, their flying paths and round-the-clock behaviors. Students will learn to design and manufacturing of AI camera, optics, electronics and develop multi-temporal deep learning algorithms for sparse and dense data for AI-assisted recognition of bird species. In developing and embracing Green AI technologies, our local community can observe the environment, learn, and implement effective conservation and revitalisation solutions to build Hong Kong towards a Smart Ecological City which utilizes natural barriers to shelter the city against future extreme weather events like Typhoon Mangkhut.
