Modeling the Urban Built Environment for Walkability Analysis
Project Description

Enhancing walkability will bring several benefits such as improved mobility and community livability, better public health, cleaner air, and tourism development. Promoting walkability in Hong Kong has been stated in the 2017 Policy Address. This project aims to capture the geometric information and features (e.g. stairs, covered, curbs) of urban built environment (e.g. footbridges, pedestrian roads, escalators) in a 3D digital format, in order to support walkability assessment and what-if analysis.

Applicant's Roles

(1) Field survey to define and understand the target built environment. (2) Collection of relevant maps and literature information. (3) Literature study to define the components, features and semantics to be modeled. (4) Walkability assessment and what-if analysis based on the collected data.

Applicant's Learning Objectives

(1) Students will be able to understand the walkability concept in smart city. (2) Students will be able to create 3D building/city models. (3) Students will be able to assess walkability and suggest enhancements based on digital models.
