This is a consulting project for Hong Kong EPD, aiming to find a better biological indicator of marine water quality. We will take water samples from around Hong Kong and identify and count different types of phytoplankton using an instrument called FlowCam.
Go to EPD to lab (Wan Chai) to bring the water samples back to our lab, process the water samples (filtration and fixation), learn how to do the counting.
1. Understand what is phytoplankton and their role in marine ecosystems and carbon cycle.
2. Be familiar with water sampling and basic lab pre-treatment processes.
3. Learn basic classification of phytoplankton and the operation of FlowCam - an image flow cytometer.
