Aerodynamics of MAVs

Project Description:As micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) see greater adoption in civilian and defense applications, their aerodynamic characteristics become increasingly important. In the literature, single stationary airfoils in ground effect have been studied over a wide range of Reynolds numbers (Re), but multiple plunging airfoils in ground effect have been studied only at high Re, which may not be directly relevant to the flight conditions of MAVs. In this study, you will perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the airflow around multiple plunging NACA-series airfoils in ground effect at low Reynolds numbers (Re ~ 100 to 1000), with a view towards better understanding the steady and unsteady aerodynamics of MAVs.
