Project Title:
Microplastic Pollution in Hong Kong Coastal Environment
Supervisor:CHAN Shu Ning
Co-Supervisor:-
Quota:2
Project Description:Plastic debris with a particle diameter of less than 5 mm is commonly referred as "microplastic", which has been gaining attention from the scientific and environmental community because they pose a more pervasive threat to the marine environment. Plastic can be broken down into smaller pieces by physical, chemical and biological processes in the marine environment. Treated effluent discharge from submarine outfalls can also be a source to the microplastic pollution in marine water. This project will investigate the transport and fate of microplastics in HK marine environment through literature review, data collection, laboratory experiments and mathematical modelling.
Course type: UROP1100 UROP2100 UROP3100 UROP4100
Applicant's Roles:Students will assist in literature search, review and summary, data collection and analysis, and participate in experimental and field investigations.
Applicant's Learning Objectives:Students will have a better understanding on the marine environment and water pollution problem in Hong Kong, and appreciate the application of science and engineering on solving environmental problems.
Complexity of the project:Moderate
