Project Title:
Polycrystal-glass transition in 2D granular systems

Project Description:The UROP student is expected to compress a monolayer of granular particles based on our current experimental setup, perform image processing to obtain particles' positions, and study the polycrystal-to-glass transition. How to distinguish an ultrafine-grained polycrystal and an amorphous solid (i.e. glass) remains an open question. Our novel simulation showed rich features at the polycrystal-glass transition. We will try to verify the simulation results by these granular experiments. Safety training is not needed. The time period can be one or two or more semesters, which is flexible.

Applicant's Roles:To perform the granular experiments with a PG student. 
Applicant's Learning Objectives:To learn experimental skills of grannular matters and image processing, as well as the related basic physics about polycrystal and amorphous solid.
