UROP Project Listing System
Project Title:
UROP research on the assessment of population exposure to air pollution
Supervisor:LAU Alexis Kai Hon
Project Description:It is well-known that air pollution is harmful to human health. However, it is unclear for most people, where and when the most harmful dose of pollution occur, or what type of daily routines contribute most to their overall exposure. The objective of this research is to use multiple methods to quantify the daily activity pattern of different population subgroups, and also quantify the population distribution at different microenvironment. By combining these information, we can build up a better picture of the population exposure of air pollution for Hong Kong and similar cities in the world.
Course type: UROP1100 UROP2100 UROP3100 UROP4100
Applicant's Roles:The students may be asked to help with monitoring of air quality at different micro-environments (e.g., at home, shopping malls, different modes of transport, etc.), or conduct surveys or more advanced techniques (including mobile phones) to collect activity information of different population subgroups, In the later phase of the project, they will be ask to combine the data to help develop a local population exposure assessment system.
Applicant's Learning Objectives:The students will develop ability to design research activity and then carry them out to support a clearly defined research objective. They would also develop ability to face unexpected situation during their field / survey activities.
Complexity of the project:Challenging
