Visualization of macromolecule dynamics within the contractile band during cytokinesis of embryonic cells

During cytokinesis in animal cells, a transient structure called the contractile band forms, functions then disassembles, during each cell division cycle. During this project we will explore the dynamics of a selected number of both structural and regulatory proteins involved in this process.

The applicant will be taught basic zebrafish husbandry skills in order to collect experimental embryos. They will also be taught basic microinjection, immunohistochemistry and fluorescent confocal microscopy techniques essential to carrying out this project.
Applicant's Learning Objectives:
The major learning objective of the project is to experience and understand the Scientific Method from the perspective of a bench scientist. In addition, the applicant will learn a variety of research skills and be taught to apply them to answer a scientific question. They will also be taught how to write-up and experiment following the generally accepted IMRAD method, and thus be able to experience first-hand the challenges of being a research scientist.
