Dynamics of Traffic Congestions

Project Description:Highway traffic shares a lot of characteristics with granular flows in physics. In analyzing the traffic data obtained from the Taiwan Highway System, we found interesting patterns of car flux and car density when congestion takes place. We propose and study models of the dynamics of traffic congestions and explore how the study can help to solve traffic problems. This project is a collaboration with Prof. Eric To of Academia Sinica in Taiwan.

Applicant's Roles:The applicants will have chance to process and analyze the traffic data obtained from the Taiwan Highway System, formulate models of traffic congestions and use them to make predictions.  
Applicant's Learning Objectives:To extract meaningful dynamical characteristics and parameters from large volume of data. To apply statistical physics models to describe traffic congestions. To identify key factors contributing to traffic congestions.
