Project Title:
Development of a red tide early warning system for fisheries management

Project Description:In sub-tropical coastal waters around Hong Kong and the South China Sea, harmful algal blooms (HAB) and red tides are often observed. Under the right environmental conditions, microscopic phytoplankton (algae) can grow explosively within a short time and cause discoloration of the water, fish kills and beach closures. Large scale massive HAB events occurred in Spring 1998 and more recently in Winter 2015 lasted for months and caused extensive damage to the local fisheries industry. The objective of this study is to develop short term red tide forecast models using real time data and drone-based imaging technology to map the location and spatial coverage of red tides.
