DESR (Data-Enabled Scalable Research) Lab – Incubator of Creative Learners and Hub of Transformation

Project Description:Under the support from the Center for Education Innovation and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, we are going to launch an innovative teaching project, called DESR (Data-Enabled Scalable Research) Lab., aiming to incorporate the spirit of Makerspace into the UG program. We hope to prepare students for the IoT/AI era through, student-centered, blended and experiential learning at the DESR Lab. The DESR Lab is located at room 1206E and is a Makerspace specialized in the applications of IoT, Deep Learning, and Big Data Analytics on the sustainable city development and an open platform for industries to collaborate and share resource. This pilot DESR Lab Residency Program is about 9-12 months for students to work on IoT, Big Data and Deep Learning. Residents will have the opportunity to interact with and then gain feedback from industry practitioners and entrepreneur. In addition, this program will also let students work on real projects that deploy IoT/Deep Learning solution to benefit and to make an impact to the HK society. Residents can choose to specialize in Deep Learning or IoT after the preliminary all-round trainings. For those who choose Deep Learning, they will learn how to work on the Python/Tensorflow program. The Residents who prefer IoT will learn everything from designing PCB, writing the MCU program to wireless radio tuning, etc.

Applicant's Roles:To learn IoT, Big data, Deep learning, etc. and then work on the real project that leverage these tools, e.g., slope/tree safety monitoring. 
Applicant's Learning Objectives:(1) To prepare students for the IoT/AI era through, student-centered, blended and experiential learning at the DESR Lab. (2) To help all the participated students gradually develop the sense of achievement, understand their self-value, and ultimately establish the self-confidence that enables themselves to face all kinds of challenges in their life-long learning journey.
