Project Title:
Proton sensing electrodes for electrochemical DNA sequencing

Project Description:One of the most common principles for electrochemical DNA sequencing is based on sensing the protons released during the hybridization of a dNTP into a DNA template. The sensing process involves proton adsorption and desorption from a semiconductor electrode with or without an ion-selective membrane atop. The kinetics and the dependence on the electrolyte content of this particular process greatly impact the performance of an electrochemical sequencer. In this project, we plan to study the electrochemical interaction between protons and various common and emerging materials for potential applications in the discussed field.
Course type: UROP1100  
Applicant's Roles:The applicant will carry out electrochemical measurements of electrodes at different pH and with different supporting electrolyte contents. He/She will also modify and/or fabricate new electrodes to improve the pH sensitivity. In the end, the applicant may integrate the electrode into a DNA sequencing chip to verify the electrode design strategy.
