Project Title:
Trade and Investment under China's Belt and Road Initiative - Implications for Hong Kong

Project Description:The appointee will be working on a HKSAR-funded research project led by Professor Albert Park, Director of IEMS. The project maps how investment and trade flows are changing as a result of the Belt and Road Initiative. The project included both quantitative and qualitative research opportunities.

Applicant's Roles:The project has opportunities for various roles: Role 1: Collect and organize data on Belt and Road countries Role 2: Build an algorithm using R to monitor news on selected projects Role 3: Perform quantitative analysis to show key trends related investments and trade Role 4: Collect data on Belt and Road projects in Southeast Asia All candidates are welcome. Candidates with specific background in math or computer science that have had previous experience of building web-scraping algorithms will be highly preferred for Role 2. Candidates with an interest in Southeast Asia will also be preferred. Another advantage is also specific language skills to be able to gather and summarize data on the following Southeast Asian countries: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.  
Applicant's Learning Objectives:The applicant will get a unique opportunity to learn about the Belt and Road Initiative, and to be an active part of our research team. He/she will develop his ability to gather reliable data sources, analyze them and write concise reports. The applicant that will oversee the web-scaping algorithm will gain an invaluable opportunity to apply his knowledge to a real-life research project with high impact. Overall, all applicants will gain considerable knowledge and experience on data collection, data analysis, and research methods.
