What is UROP?

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, or UROP for short, is a HKUST signature program designed to provide undergraduate students with an exciting opportunity to engage in academic research, thereby helping them to develop insightful perspectives on their areas of interest and advance the frontiers of knowledge. Launched in 2005, UROP is offered every summer to allow students to immerse themselves in a variety of tailor-made research projects under the supervision of world-class researchers.

UROP has been well received by both students and faculty, and enrollment has increased every year since its establishment. To leverage upon the program’s success, and position it as a flagship program for HKUST, a new course series was introduced in Fall 2010, and UROP is now offered in all three semesters (fall, spring and summer). Students can now participate in rigorous research that spans the academic year.

BBA in Marketing

Involvement in UROP was one of my best experiences at HKUST. It paved the way for me to define, approach, and conduct art history research. I not only gained knowledge and learning methodologies but also had the opportunity to engage with different ideas. My projects on modern Chinese literati paintings have inspired me to explore related issues more deeply in graduate studies. I love UROP because it is not just a course to be completed but has challenged and revealed what my next step will be.
