Advanced colourful building Integrated Photovoltaic Systems
Project Description
Buildings are the key contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and also the main electricity consumer in Hong Kong. Building integrated Photovoltaics BIPV is a promising solution to harvest clean solar energy and reduce Green House Gas emissions. Meanwhile, there is also an urgent demand to update the building envelopes with smart technologies into intelligent facilities to support the demands of future cities.

This project will develop and test a series of advanced colourful building integrated photovoltaic systems in HKUST campus, in collaboration with campus renovations.

Smart prototypes will be developed in cooperation with leading companies in related fields, design guidelines will be generated for urban designer, architect, engineers and policiy makers.

Applicant's Roles
Will help to construct and assemble prototypes of BIPV systems, collect operation data of the BIPV system, help to build digital twins model of the BIPV system, conduct user evaluation survey (e.g. on campus).
Applicant's Learning Objectives
Students will learn holistically how an advanced BIPV system is designed, constructed, and operate.

Students will learn the principles of sustainable architecture design, and get the frontier concept of photovoltaic technologies.

Students will learn how to prototype through experiential learning (hands-on )experience.

Students will learn key principles of aesthetic and colour science.

Students will learn how to conduct the scientific survey and how data should be collected.
