Towards Meta-Campus Experience with Extended Reality
Project Description
Extended reality (XR) is the next mainstream technology that utilizes Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to provide immersive experiences. While AR/VR devices have become increasingly accessible in recent years, their daily use is still limited and under-explored.

The HKUST VisLab XR team is devoted to bringing XR into real life and enriching everyone’s XR experience. Our research mission is to design and develop effective XR techniques and user-friendly applications to improve productivity and creativity.

We use human-centered design and data-driven methods to innovate XR technology. We have been developing XR applications to facilitate extensive data analysis for decision-making, resulting in novel visualization techniques, interactions, and authoring tools.
Our research has contributed to solving various critical real-world challenges, including social media marketing, urban planning, and education.

In this project, students will work with senior researchers to develop XR applications to create meta-campus. We will cooperate to use HKUST as a living lab and explore ways to enrich the living experience using XR approaches. We will showcase how people live, study, and play together in XR to transcend the abovementioned constraints of time and space.

We also welcome new ideas and interests in our other projects, including but not limited to the following:

- XR visualization for different application domains, including social good, smart campus, education, etc.

- XR storytelling

- XR data analytics

- XR authoring tools for creativity

Applicant's Roles
1. Survey similar projects in the world

2. Design user interface and data visualization for the application.

3. Build a system and implement algorithms to realize the design.

Thus, it would be a plus if students are majoring in computer science with experience in data visualization and using 3D modeling software like Blender and game engines like Unity.
Applicant's Learning Objectives
1. Get a deep understanding of the state-of-the-art AR/VR development

2. Obtain first-hand experience in designing and developing an AR or VR application

3. Develop with state-of-the-art AR/VR devices (such as HoloLens 2 and Quest Pro)
